True orthodontic emergencies are rare, but we are here to help if they do occur. As a general rule, call our office if you experience severe pain or have a painful appliance problem. We'll schedule an appointment as soon as possible to resolve the problem.
It's important to know that you can manage many problems yourself until you can get to our office. After you get your braces or other appliance, your lips, cheeks, and tongue can become irritated for one to two weeks. This happens as they learn a new posture and become accustomed to the raised surface of the braces. The best way to manage this is to put wax on the braces that are causing irritation. When you get your braces on, the team at Rad Orthodontics will make sure you have wax and know how to apply it.
If the tenderness is severe, you can take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or whatever you normally take for headache or similar pain. Keep in mind that pain management and anti-inflammatory medicines such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), and Naproxen Sodium (Naprosyn, Anaprox) actually slow tooth movement, so we do not recommend using them often during your treatment.
Even if you are able to alleviate your discomfort, it is vital that you call our office as soon as possible to schedule a time to repair the problem. It is important for our trained staff to check the appliance or brackets to make sure it is still working the way it is supposed to. Allowing your appliance to remain damaged for an extended period of time may result in disruptions to your treatment plan.
There are Several Things You Can Try While Waiting For Your Appointment:
General Soreness & Irritation From New Braces or Appliances
When you first get your braces on, you may feel general soreness in your mouth, and your teeth. It may be tender when eating or biting for three to five days. The best thing to do is stick to a soft diet until your teeth do not hurt when chewing or biting.
If you have irritated gums and other sore spots, you can soothe and treat them by rinsing your mouth with a warm salt-water mouthwash. Dissolve one teaspoonful of salt in eight ounces of warm water, and swich vigorously to rinse your mouth. You can repeat this several times a day.
As you loose teeth, and as new teeth erupt, your retainer may not fit as well as it should. Your retainer, can also get loose from wearing it - just putting it and and taking it out can loosen it oer time. In these cases, you'll need to come to the office to have the retainer adjusted. If a piece is poking you, place wax on it to protect your mouth.
If a bracket or band comes off your tooth, but is still attached to the wire, you should leave it in place and put wax on it as needed for comfort.
If the bracket or band can be removed easily, take it off the tooth and be sure to save it in an envelope or bag. Bring it to your appointment.
In both cases, call the office to schedule an appointment to put the bracket back on. It is very important that you come to the office to have the bracket replaced as soon as possible - the effectiveness and efficiency of your treatment depend on that.
If the wire has slid around to one side, you can use needle-nosed pliers to pull it back to the other side, and then slide it back into the tube on the back tooth.
If an elastic has come off and the wire is loose from the bracket, it is okay to use a piece of floss to tie the wire into place: simply tie the floss around the bracket in place of the missing colored o-ring.
If you cannot put the wire into a comfortable position, and covering the end with wax doesn’t help, a last resort is to use a small fingernail clipper to clip the wire just behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened. If the end of the wire is still sharp, place wax on it to prevent it from poking your mouth.
If your braces are poking you, put some soft wax on the piece that’s sticking out or bothering your lips or cheeks. You can cover the brackets with wax to protect yoru lips and cheeks.
If a wire is sticking out, use a pencil eraser to push the poking wire down and in. You can also put wax on the end of the wire so it is no longer poking.
Soreness Caused By Headgear
Sometimes discomfort is caused by not wearing the headgear as instructed by your orthodontist. Please make sure you are following the instructions provided by our staff. The headgear should hurt less the more it’s worn, so be sure you get in the prescribed number of hours. If the facebow (metal piece) is bent, please call us for assistance. It is important that you come to the office to realign it so that your treatment is effective.
